The stages of oral cancer
The importance of early detection
Early detection impacts the survival rate because it’s usually associated with the early stages of cancer: Stages I and II of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and oral pre-malignant lesions (OpL).At Big Bay Dental we use a adjunctive tool called Vizilite Plus. Vizilite Plus used a light source that helps to improve the examiners ability to identify abnormal tissue that could be overlooked under normal lighting.

- Increased risk in patients 40 years of age or older
- Ages 18-39 combined with tobacco use, chronic alcohol consumption or oral HPB infection
- Highest risk is ages 65 and older with life style risk factors or patients with history of oral cancer
The reason we recommend annual oral cancer screening with Vizilite is because 25% of oral cancer occurs in people who don’t smoke and have not other risk factors.
