Non-surgical gum therapy

Non-surgical periodontal treatment
Periodontal disease can be a long-term infection involving the gums and bone tissue. At Big Bay Dental our team is pleased to offer non-surgical periodontal treatment to remove the infectious bacterial living under the gums.In some cases periodontal infections can go unnoticed which enables it to exist for several years. This is the reasons frequent dental appointments are essential.

Periodontal disease affects other health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. Your Dentist or Dental Hygienist can recognize these symptoms to allow for treatment before the infection spreads. Our office offers an organized system for early detection, diagnosis, non-surgical treatment and maintenance. This treatment is often referred to as Soft Tissue Management; our Dental Hygienist have undergone significant training in the field of soft tissue management.

Frequently asked questions:

What is a pocket?
The space between the top of the gum line and the approximate height of the bone, this is the area your hygienist focuses on during your cleaning. When the pocket is infected the tissue pulls away from the tooth and bleeds easily this is why annual measurements are taken. From these measurements we determine if any periodontal disease is present and the frequency you require to maintain healthy gums.

What is scaling and root planning?

Scaling and root planning focuses on removing plaque, calculus, and stain from the tooth. Root planning focuses on removing calculus below the gum line where you are unable to reach with your toothbrush and floss. This allows the gums tissue to reattach to the clean tooth surface.
